What to do When a Dog Crate Doesn’t Work?
This post is going to take a look at some alternative options to using a crate for your dog. In some situations, a crate may not be suitable due to space or your dogs current feelings about the crate. I highly encourage anyone with a dog to troubleshoot why you’re not using a crate if you’re not already, and help change your dog's perception if they do not already feel comfortable in their crate. However, if crates are not a viable option for you, here are some alternatives.
TETHERS
Tethers can be used both outside and inside when management is needed. The most common use of a tether is to contain a dog without a fence, but they can also be used in the living room as management to prevent a wide range of behaviors. Using a tether tied to a stationary object can prevent the practice of undesirable behaviors and set your dog up for success. As their good behavior on the tether is reinforced you can increase the length of the tether until the management can be removed.
Additionally, tethers can be used for extra management in cases of aggression or fear. Having a dog on a tether offers an extra level of backup in case the dog were to go over threshold while training or having visitors over, as the tether will prevent them from being able to enter the person's space.

DAYCARE OR DOG WALKER
If you do not want to use a crate but do not have the time in your day to go home and let your dog outside or give them enrichment, consider using a daycare or dog walker if suitable to help get your dog some exercise and enrichment midday to promote relaxation and prevent the practice of undesirable behaviors. Remember to build up any time alone in small increments to prevent destruction and separation anxiety.
However, when using a daycare or dog walker/sitter, be cautious and do thorough research on the company/location/individual and their practices. If your dog is more aroused or their problem behaviors increase after having them go to a dog daycare or with a walker, you may need to reconsider and go with a different option.
